Baptist Church Teachings: What God Says About Forgiveness

“Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”

Proverbs 17:9 | NIV

Human as we are, we tend to forget the value of forgiveness. Forgiveness depends on the greatness of the sin, and when it’s too great that it fuels the feelings of anger and hatred inside of us, forgiveness is never an option.

However, as followers of Christ the Savior, he calls us to forgive others just as the Lord Our God forgives us. Keep in mind what Matthew 6:14 says.

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Matthew 6:14 | NIV

We understand that there are circumstances that are far too great that mercy and forgiveness do not seem to be an option. But think about how Christ died for our sins, and while He was hanging on the cross, one of his last words to His Father in heaven was “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.”

Even when we failed Him and let Him bear our sins, He still thought about us and our salvation. As a Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, we call you to lift up your feelings of resentment and bitterness to the Lord. When the feeling becomes too burdensome or destructive for us to bear, we can ask God for guidance and the heart to forgive because He, alone, can give us the strength to do so.

“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.”

Micah 7:18 | NIV

At the same time, God calls for you to forgive yourself as well. When you know you have done wrong or you feel that you are not worthy enough of love, He wants you to turn to Him and open your heart to forgiveness.

Through all of the forgiving, for oneself and others, healing becomes gradual. Although it is slow, it gives you the strength to fight another day and to welcome God into your life.
